The Challenge

The region grows and moves an extraordinary amount of food. It also contains neighborhoods where a fresh vegetable requires a bus ride. That contradiction — abundance and scarcity within a few miles of each other — is the defining feature of the food landscape across Greater Philadelphia and New Jersey, and it is not primarily a supply problem. It is a problem of distribution, purchasing power, land, transport, retail economics, and whose needs the system was built around.

Meanwhile the ground keeps shifting. Federal nutrition benefits fluctuate with the political cycle. Small farms and independent grocers operate on margins that make any disruption existential. Emergency food providers are absorbing demand that was never meant to be permanent, using a charitable model built for temporary shortfalls. And the growing evidence that food is health has not yet translated into the financing that would let health systems act on it.

The Food Hub connects the growers, distributors, retailers, emergency providers, health partners, and community organizations who each hold part of this picture — and rarely get to assemble it.
